I used Red Dot for my pistol reloads many years ago when I reloaded 357 and 45 long colt. But I'm wondering if any of you guys have a prefered rifle powder? I'll be doing the reloading for the SKS in 7.62x39 and possibly a  30-06 Bolt action hunting rifle. I didn't do much reloading of rifles and focused almost exclusivly on pistols before I joined the Army.

Jamie you need to buy a good reloading manual. All of the bullet manufactures offer them. I like the one from bullet manufacture more than the ones from powder companies because the powder companies give loads for their powders only and the bullet companies give loads for many types of powder.

As to one powder for both the 7.62X39 and the 30-06, since they have different burning rates it would have to be a compromise and not the best choice for either round. I have used both IMR 3031 ( because that's my favorite for a 30-30 and works well in medium size cases) and IMR 4198 ( a very versatile powder).

jamie keep in mind that reloading for a semi auto is different than reloading for a bolt action. You need to buy "small base dies" to make sure the brass is sized small enough to chamber easily. Remember too that a lot of 7.62X39 brass is not re-loadable. Be sure to use a magnet on all of the 7.62 brass to make sure it is indeed brass and not steel. Also a 7.62X39 does not use the same bullet as most 30 cal. rifles, it uses a .311 diameter bullet, the same as a British .303 not a .308 diameter as american 30 calibers use.

A 7.62X 39 in an semi auto is not the easiest platform for a novice to learn to reload on. For that rifle, cheap military grade ammo is easier and probably as cheap as re-loaded ammo and you won't need to buy more than a box or two of "GOOD AMMO" for hunting.

I've heard that you should use very hard primers (like Wolf, I guess) with 7.62x39 to avoid misfires. Never reloaded for this caliber since it just didn't make economic sense for me.

This is more of a back up system for the SKS in case they start to register ammo like some states want to do. Most of my reloading will be for pistol.

Good price on ammo and shipping may be ok price if closer to Tenn. than I am.  Still I can get about 120 rounds to start for $43.00.

Jamie, I believe the owner was a past customer of mine. Mr. Widener… can't remember his first name. His business is about 30 minutes from my house.
