I'm part of the 15 percent of the U.S. population that has never used a cell phone, but I've been thinking about getting one. In my research, I'm finding out there are quite a few risks of being spied upon and tracked:

Being tracked is the first step to having a string of bad experiences (e.g., harrassment, identity theft, kidnapping).  As the U.S. enters a prolonged period of decline, I expect criminals to take advantage of weaknesses in cell phone security to prey on their victims.

At least I'm becoming knowledgeable about the risks and preventive measures to take if I decide to go ahead and get a cell phone.

It is good to understand the risks, especially as capabilities and uses grow for cell phones including shopping, banking, etc by cell phone.  When you think about it, it probably shouldn't be called a phone anymore.

The benefits of having a mobile telephone for voice communication outweighs the cost and risks. From a preparedness point of view, I consider it essential.

Get a simple phone that can't get on the internet (hard to find now a days), put a password on it, and don't let it out of your sight.

Also, get a google voice number and route all your inbound and outbound calls through that number.  This should keep you fairly secure.

I know that in Mexico many people are very caution regarding what they say on the phone precsiely becuase they fear kidnappers may be listenting.  Instead people have learned to be vague or communicate in pseudo code.  Like if you have previous appointment with a friend, you don't call her to say, "hey I'm at starbucks."  You just say, "I'm here, see you in a few."

Great advice.  Although I have been a google fan for a long time, that company is starting to creep me out.

I ended my relationship with AT&T and Verizon. Now my wife and I pay $60/ month via $40 Straight Talk phones. 1000 minutes 1000 texts and sufficient Data if needed per month. Additionally, my name or any personal data is not associated with the account. I buy the service cards with cash.Smile

I tried the trac phones, the downside is they dont work in all areas due to the towers they use.

I have a verizon phone, its old and it can still access the net but its so horrible I dont ever use it. I REFUSE to get smartphone, not only are they junk but the security with such an item is horrible. Anyone with a brain and some knowhow can hack you thru its wireless signal.

I never have signal problems, dropped calls or any regional no service issues.

Could be the carrier you that certain brand uses, I had the one called "trac fone" and it was only so so. Had issues with dropped calls, coverage, etc.
