Just finished reading "Surviving the Economic Collapse." I'm very happy I found this book and this group. Thankfully, I have one friend in the area who is going down this road with me, otherwise I think I would at times doubt my sanity! When I walk around town, it's like "Business as usual." It's completely mindboggling to me how many people in the San Francisco Bay Area seem to have their heads up there asses about the inevitable "adjustment" we're going to have to make. Maybe I'm just hanging out in the wrong places, but finding this group seems like a breath of fresh air.
So, my approach to all this is very practical. I'm not paranoid by nature. I just grew up reading 1984, Fahrenheit 451 and other dystopias, and when I read the news and look around, I can't help but see very disturbing trends happening in terms of liberty, America's economic situation, the insanity of of consumerism and the "bread and circuses of distraction," etc, etc.
I already have lots of "living supplies" stocked. What this book did for me, however, was to make me brutally aware of my deficiencies. Therefore some of my goals this year are: a)acquire a Glock 19 and gain proficiency via defensive shooting classes, etc b) learn how to actually use my small (but growing) knife collection — and actually learn how to sharpen a knife, which as a 39-year old dude, I really ought to know; c) start taking some MMA classes and up my physical training; d) get a more functional 4x4 truck e) work a lot and put a lot of money away to fund this stuff and put some cash away.
Having just finished graduate school (and unfortunately being broke and in debt), while also being a serious outdoors enthusiast (thank you for clarifying that SHTF is not just an extended camping trip!!), I'm also creatively funding this by dropping my apartment and rent for the year and camping in some of our local wilderness areas (which i have done before for a number of months) and using the proceeds of low overhead and my two jobs to pay for the above. Living light and simple. Should be an interesting year!
Best to everyone and look forward to being part of this community..

Welcome Sean! Like you, and a lot of other people, Fernando's book was a real eye-opener for me as well. It sounds like you're focused and ready to get serious about being prepared, which is good to hear. You'll have to keep us posted on how your life in the woods goes. If you ever start to question what you're doing and need a reminder, our community of like-minded people will be here.
Welcome aboard! We're glad to have you.

Welcome to the group, Sean. I'm always excited to meet a new member. Most of us had the reaction you did to the book and to GTA. When I found Grab the Apple, I thought, "Wow, there are others like me." Keep us posted. -MW

Hey dude welcome aboard. Your experience mirrors most of ours. People just don't want to face the fact that this could really happen to them. I am meeting more people who are waking up but they are few and far between. When you consider the cost of getting prepared verses the cost of not being prepared, it's a no brainier. What's the worst that can happen if we're mistaken? Extra food, silver, gold, savings, guns, ammo, a feeling of accomplishment…… and they think we're nuts…..go figure!

Glad to have you here, thanks for joining.
Did you consider buying a used camper? Those tihngs look like a lot of fun and feel more like a real home than a tent, more of a solid home feeling. There's even a blogger chick that posts about life in a camper, traveling around the US and Mexico. Sort of hot looking readhead, I'll post the link if I find it. With a wife and two brats its not that easy, but I'd certainly try it for some time if I was single.
Anyway, take care and see you around. And you're not crazy, you're just better and more aware than most people around you!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I'm looking forward to spending some quality time on the forum. Hey FerFal – as for the camper… I've thought of that, but at this point, it's the tent for me while I save up a good 4 to 5 months worth of money… I was thinking of a VW Westfalia, or maybe a pick-up with a hard top, or a number of possibilities….we'll see.
Just plan on living lightly and making some money (while I can!), as I start my "Jedi training"… : )

Welcome,
I am knew to the site as well.
I was stationed at Letterman Army Medical Center, at the Presidio of San Fransisco in 1982.
I was a great experience. This was before loony boy shot up the school yard in the capital of you state.
I used to wait to get Survival Guide at the BX every month,
It was a great read even if it was dumb downed a bit. I practice medicine in the state of Texas and would gladly help you with advice on what to stock in your medical kit preps and advice on text books and such.
Best Regards, FNG, Dirk

Welcome Sean I am new to this forum as well. I have just finished the book as well. I find the people here are very thoughtful and well informed. You are not alone and should consider yourself fortunate to be awakened before mant others…. time is of the essence. If your ever in Canada drop me a line…..but you wouldn't want to live in a tent up here!!!

Thanks for the kind welcome.. my former in-laws (whom I'm very close with) live in Toronto. I've spend a fair amount of time up there, as well as on Georgian Bay (which is a favorite). Canada is a cool place.
