Hello everyone, I've been following Ferfal since his early posts in Frugal Squirrels and the survival boards, I drop out of the loop for a year or more and now look what's happened, it's exploded! I've always been impressed by his real world approach and took his advice like gospel (even traded in my .357 ruger for a Glock 22 after reading his posts) I'm so excited that he's made such an impact on everyone and that people are waking up and preparing for the real world instead of fantasy land.
At any rate, I moved from Las Vegas to Nebraska corn land about 3 years ago after studying the trends and realizing that the US is headed for a collapse. I wanted to be in the Midwest because any effect on the economy is going to start at the coasts and work its way inward. Not to mention the Midwest is where all the food is. Fortunately I moved when I did, shortly after Vegas suffered massive lack of tourism, unemployment rates went sky high and foreclosures went through the roof. Now the "death trap" that is Vegas is looking more and more like a ghost town and is listed among the worst suffering from economic down fall.
It really goes to show how much you can benefit from learning about what is happening around you and following your intuitions. If that gut feeling is telling you to get the hell out of dodge, you might want to listen. If you're stuck there, all you can do is prepare and at least receive some peace of mind.
Very happy you are doing well Ferfal, have enormous respect for you and your dedication all these years, I'm for sure snagging your book and devouring it

Welcome and congrats on following your instincts. Lots of people are wishing they were that wise.

Thank you! Very happy to be here!
Yes a great number of people are kicking themselves for not pulling out when they had the chance and a great number still are in denial while their SS and pensions are being stripped from them, IRA's and 401k's plumeted over 40% and any hope of that comfortable retirement is now lost. I'm beginning to have some respect for France now after hearing about the labor strikes lately. We in the US should take note, though I'm positive only taking away Beer and Football would cause that kind of uproar in the states.

LOOK: Start to get wrapped around the idea that it was over in the Fall of 2008. This is just the dying quivers. Stop waiting for "IT" to happen, "IT" already happened.

Indeed my friend! I have a lot of Euro friends and it's amazing to watch the changes that are happening there. About 2000 I started telling them it was unsustainable. They considered me an amusingly ecentric American with a large strain of provincialism leading me to misunderstand the World Economy.

Thanks for the warm welcomes!
I think it was once said that all that is needed to turn a civilized country into barbarism is to shut off the power for 3 days. Don't quote me on that, though it makes sense. While living in Vegas I noticed a few things. The majority of people in vegas don't talk to their neighbors, however once the power went out, everyone seemed to venture outside in groups and socialized. I honestly don't think it was because it is so bloody hot there without AC, but generally people in western society haven't the slightest clue how to handle not having their forms of instant gratification, i.e. TV.
There was an exercise on a preparedness site that required you to shut off the utilities for 3 days, if you can reasonably do so of course, and survive solely on what items you had stored in order to acclimate you to living off the grid for short periods of time and ultimately test your level of preparedness, gear, food items, etc. IMHO the only way to really be sure that you've got everything you need is to do exactly that, make it a real SHTF scenario. You really don't want to find out that that $2500 dollar generator is a piece of junk when you need it the most. Or find out that your 6 month supply of food has little critters crawling in it when it's the last thing you have to eat.
I suppose it's like testing your gear when you go camping every weekend. Though it not only does that but tests your resolve, mindset, solidifys family interaction and cooporation and gets you away from boob tube for a bit. You'll be amazed the quality of time you can share, not only with yourself but your family as well and the lessons learned from it will be invaluable.
