Hello. Ok, I'm here because I finally get it. I'm afraid that i'm too late. My business was shuttered by the IRS last month because I frakked up on some filing requirements and now i'm screwed. Inventory wasting away… bounced employee payroll checks… This god damn government can kiss my big white ass cause i'm sick of this system. i'm giving up. I have enough to live a meager life and say hasta la vista to the whole thing. So, anyways, I'm pretty sure this country is about due to crumble all around us..

Hi Buck,  sorry to hear about your s**t sandwich situation.  Welcome to the Apple.  There's a lot of good info here and everyone I've interacted with in the short time I've been here has been very cool.  I hope things get better for you.

Man,  Ohio is getting hammered. You aren't to late Buck it's getting  a bit costly but you still have time. Seeds are cheap and home depot and Lowes have some sales on seeds. Get your basic food, your hard goods prices are going down. Watch for sales especially yardsales and thrift stores. Sorry about your business. I don't know what to tell you. Except this month get your rice anything under 50 cents a pound should be jumped on. Beans you got time to shop, grains and flour if you get a good buy jump on as well as sugar, coffee and cocoa or chocolate.

Check out my $100.00 shopping list. It's up about $25.00 but it will give you some basics ideas on food to store. Wish things were better but you hit a good spot to learn.

Yes, welcome aboard mate. Not that it's any comfort, but half of Europe is wrecked too… But at least the bankers are still getting their bonuses.

Hi  Buck: welcome aboard from a fellow southern Ohio'en (Over towards Portsmouth)….I've never owned a business so I can't imagine what it's like for you now. I've been laid off from a job before and unemployed for about a month. It helped as soon as I took a new job somewhere else (had to relocated but it was nice getting back on my feet again). The rules are not stacked in our favor no matter what but if you can, find a job that offers steady employment and it will help establishing some stability back in to your life. And then do what the rest of us do: whatever Jamie says!!!stickGood luck and stay with us!

Howdy Buck!

There is no time like the present for getting started.

Don't panic. Do your research. Get your food, water and security covered.

There is allot of good info here in the orchard and a good pool of knowledge for asking questions.

Well, here's my first question, when is this collapse going to happen? are we talking weeks, months, years? How long will it last and how bad will it get? I'm self sufficient as far as property and money, albeit meagerly now that my biz is a bust, but I thought about buying a couple pallets of MREs and bottled water.

Well, Buck, its difficult to answer your question because you are getting on board a little late, to be frank. Many of us, and preppers nationwide, have been on this train for 2 years or more -since the '08 meltdown for me. Don't take my comments as an insult, I'm trying to paint a clear picture here.

I believe the collapse is imminent and, for all intents and purposes, unstoppaple. As to a time frame, it could happen any day…could be happening right now, or could be a matter of weeks or months. The year (or more) time fram is something I have trouble believing because the structure of our system whether it be monetary policy, debt, spending, housing, unemployment, corruption is bad enough to fall apart from the effect of any number of serous 'triggers' such as a terrorist attack, HUGE NATURAL DISASTER, or global incident. In, short, you need to get into high gear NOW.

The MRE idea and bottled water is not bad, but may not be cost effective for you, or space friendly. I would recommend securing your staples items first as well as having a bug out plan just incase you have to evacuate or otherwise fly the coop because of events. I'll let others specify the particulars as far as types and quantities of food and other supplies.

P/S  …do you have guns, ammo, training to use them?

Buck, what I've always said, and I'm sure you can go back and look, is that it will be a slow trip to the bottom, with large unexpected events making it worse in increments. I don't really believe in a collapse all at once but we will have crisis after crisis at an ever-increasing speed. But there will be times of relative normalcy. The important thing is to have food, water, tools, a handgun and clothing to get you by during hard times. You need to be fed and warm. Keeping fed will give you the energy to take advantage of what comes your way. Those without food will become lethargic and live day-to-day.

First and foremost is food and water, second is a way to protect the food and water, third would be shelter. There are millions of people around the globe surviving without a home, but none without food and water. There is some great information in the archives of this site and don't be afraid to start a new thread if you need help.

I think that's right, but the crisis are now happening  with greater and greater speed. Line them up….Mid East crisis, European monetary crisis, world food shortages, Japanese earth quake/tsunami/nuclear melt-down, US debt crisis/two wars. Looks bad, maybe closer to a global meltdown than ever. The collapse of the third largest economy in the world will be felt around the world.

Hey Buck: I think the most important aspect of preparedness is the mindset…it's the one tool that makes all the other tools work! Over at Ferfal's other site, he has a post that condenses his whole book…it's probably the best article he's written outside the book that talks about what to expect and what to prepare for, and how to properly prepare (order of importance, etc). It's very lengthy but well worth the time to look at. I like to read it as a refresher to keep my own mind in check. After a while, I've found out that the prepping lifestyle is more than just preparing for catastrophe's but a way of life that trains your mind to always think ahead. Even though I haven't experienced the effects of a meltdown in our society, I've found my life becoming 'easier' so to speak: I feel like I'm prepared for not only hardships but most curve balls that life can throw your way. Below is the link to his post: enjoy!

I guess my opinion is a bit different on timelines. I expect a very fast economic collapse once it starts it will cascade. I think it will happen this year. Not saying to scare folks I hope I'm wrong, and I've been amazed how long the PTB's have been able to kick the can down the road.

I'd go for fast, dirty and cheap on the basics. Seeds are cheap and even if you don't start a garden this year $20.00 spent on heirloom seeds is a great investment. If you like them rice, pasta, beans, flour and wheat will get you the most calories for your buck.

Weapons: I recommend 1st a 12ga. shotgun for home defense and at least 100 rounds of #2 or greater shot,  and a 22. Long rifle and 500 rounds for hunting. Pistols is a matter of preference but a 9mm to start and couple of magazines and at least 250 rounds. Most gun stores will let you trade up so to speak if you start with a Hi-point you can trade it toward the pistol you want in the future but at least you have something to protect yourself.  I'd look for a .30 caliber long range rifle for hunting larger animals.

Water: Soda bottles can be washed and are great for water and free. I do like the 5 gallon camp jugs and about as much weight as I'd want to try and move any distance. A little bleach, a good filter and some coffee filters should keep you going for a bit of time. I'd recommend getting some "Rain Barrels" if you can for the garden and flushing toilets. Some extra tarps and buckets will let you harvest more rain water.

First aid: Have plenty of bandages, aspirin, cough medicine on hand. If you have had the flu or a cold you know to treat the symptoms. I like the the chemical  Ice packs and heat wraps and lotions I get at the dollar stores. But they have all kinds of cortisone creams and topical formulas for treating minor ailments. Gatorade or Tang for supporting a sick person.

Sanitation: You got to keep yourself clean that means soap, Toilet Paper, a little camper potty or even a bucket. Get those sanitary napkins or tampons. Toothpaste and brushes. Construction grade trash bags and learn to dispose of your waste safely.  I got sponges for when the TP runs out but I just got another delivery of back up TP in the form of a Phone book.

Heat and shelter: Get a  tent or 2 that will fit the whole family and 0 degree sleeping bags. You can bug out with them plus most of the popup tents now a days are great for setting up even indoors and can conserve heat. Extra robes, jammies, sweats that can be layered to keep warm. T-shirts, and extra undies to keep clean and change out. Clean clothes are warm clothes. Wool and cotton as your basic fabrics. Cotton breathes and is great in summer time. Wool because it retains heat even when wet. Good shoes when you get a shoe you like buy at least 2 preferably 3 pairs and switch daily. It will make them last 3-6x longer than a single pair.

Money: have at least enough to pay cash for a tank of gas or a grocery trip. Not enough to be a target. I think about $50.00 to $100.00 dollars always on hand. Don't put your life at risk depending on an ATM.

This is quick and dirty list of what you need. You could and should do more and as you learn this is easy to add to and refine. I think it should get you started at being a prepper or survivalist. I'm sure the orchard will chime in on the stuff I missed. Gosh I love em always more to learn and stuff I didn't consider.

Great list jamie.

I think the time line will be a slow downward pace to the edge of the cliff. The economy will continue to go down hill until a trigger pushes it off the cliff.
