Got a big bag of dogfood, catfood today. But I did get a lot done washing out my buckets and another couple of coins of silver this last week. Been having some physical problems and not feeling well, so not much outside work has gotten done. But hopefully that will get better as Spring progresses

I started watching the just-released The Art of the Dynamic Handgun DVD set by Magpul Dynamics today (you can watch the trailer here). I watched The Art of the Tactical Carbine, Vol. 1 and it is excellent.

Tested a foil package of salmon that I won't be buying any more of, I'll stick with canned.

I looked in a display case at one of those fancy high dollar serrated edged flashlights, nice. Then I thought, how can I make one with a file or a dremmel?

While looking for a good deal on some ammo I bought an earthquake pry tool that looks like a punch or a nail with a small claw on one end to replace the much heavier one in my B.O.B. I'm debating now though, is a round pry bar going to work as well as, or close enough to a flat pry bar? If I stick with the newer pry bar, I'll put my old one in my tool kit in my SUV.

I noticed a cheap shortwave radio I'll have to stop and look at next time and see how it compares to the ones on Ferfal's.

I talked to a friend and ever so gently and briefly introduced the idea of a B.O.B. and it's applications.

I set aside some FRN$ (money) to buy some silver.

Great job Clark!! I buy whole Ocean salmon (no color added, not farm raised) when it's less than $4.00 per pound. I've smoked and cured it. I hope to try caning my own fish, plus bacon and butter besides the usual veggies this summer/fall.

Check out http://beprepared.com/ I like the hardware you can get, the "Samurai Tool" hatchet, hammer and pry bar in one and about 12-14 inches long for around $5.00  and the little LED flashlight is faboo for the price. Both are great for vehicles and bags. I'm not big on the foods they are to high priced.

When you go shopping for silver go to APMEX. com and check the spot price before shopping.

April 8 was my birthday, and I was sick with a cold and a fever.  Picked up my van from the shop (repaired a few lingering, but not critical problems) and stocked up on a few long-shelf life grocery items on sale.   I took a nap in the afternoon to reduce stress and recover.  After dinner we had a small family celebration.  I received a nice Lodge 5qt cast iron dutch oven and a Gadsten Flag (Don't Tread on Me).

Yesterday I bought four blueberry bushes and spent most of the day with the two teenage children still left in the house as it is their Spring Break.

Today I get 40,000lbs of stone for the drive at the farm

I talked to a friend about security and gun related learning. He's become amazingly more open to my TEOTWAWKI ramblings. Organized my gun bag and some targets for a shooting session today, although, we cacelled because of bad weather. I don't mind shooting in the wet, but then I have to clean all weapons right after we shoot, and I'm not up for that. We'll give it a "shot" next Wednesday. Bought some stuff for my girlfriends pack (we're not far enough along to call it a BOB yet). She went to visit her daughter in Seattle this weekend and managed to get through security with all the pocket dump stuff I insist she carry, which she keeps in her purse. She forgot to put it into her checked bag and they didn't catch it. So I'm setting up a back up in case she ends up losing it.

Test fired some new magazines for the 10/22's, checked the zero on the scopes too.Rifle

Packed 100# of rice in 3 buckets with co2 , somthing new I'm trying. I buy co2 by the 75# cylinder and refill paintball tanks so I used a low pressure regulator to put co2 gas in the buckets before and during the filling process, marked with the date of course. I'm hoping this will put the bite on the critters that might like my rice ; ) smile

I never did any long term rice storage because of reading it doesn't store well, anyone out there have experiance with storing rice for two or more years?Reading  (hows that for optimism? TWO YEARS HAHAHAHA!)

Celebrated a belated neighborhood Easter breakfast with neighbors.  Had a disussion with one neighbor about long term food and water storage, financial preps and possible outcomes of the ongoing financial crises.  We agreed that if things go downhill quickly, that our group of neighbors would work together and make the best of it.

Nice Floridian; people here are getting more agreeable to such chat as well.

We hosted a Square Dance in our home lastnight and also got to talking about backup electricity, food storage, and the way the economy is runnin on debt and runnin out of new "cards" to apply for.

All in all a good time and good networking too.Smile

@Crab Apple On Storage You want to keep all grains in a cool, dry,  dark place if possible. I started with Rubbermade containers in the 10-18 gallon range and then placed whatever I was storing in 1-2 gallon Food-grade Freezer bags. You should be able to get at least 5 years that way on everything but whole wheat flour which is about 2 years.

If you want to longer term use Mylar bags. They can be sealed with a foodsaver system. Place an Oxygen absorber or Diatomaceous Earth in with it. That should get you to the 10-25 year range. DE is a good kid and petsafe insect controller. (Food Grade ONLY) Not the pool treatment stuff.

I have used both rice and wheat and white flours stored this way for at least a year no problems with vermin or taste or making bread.

As an aside, does anyone else have trouble keeping track of all your gear and goods? It seems like I just get everything squared away and then a trip to the range and my gun bags, safe, and ammo bin are a total mess. This happens with my BOB all the time. I take it with me on a road trip and it seems like I begin using stuff inside and before long it's also a mess. Maintaining all this stuff is a real bitch.

Well just topped off the Toilet Paper stash. I got my years worth, and all of it on sale.

EN I think its the nature of the beast of all hunting and fishing gear is always in a "State of Entropy" You might try one of those hard sided cases at some office stores. A lot of PC repair folks use them for parts and tools. I like mine because you can rearrange the compartments to fit what you need to store and the dividers are a thin foam so you get some cushioning for your stuff.  You might check with a local PC repair place for packaging foam and baggies to help compartmentalize your bag or box.

I still think an old fashion Military footlocker is one of the best storage boxes made. They are just hard to find. I found one at a yardsale that was metal clad and I am using it as my EMP Box.

I'm also a big believer in carrying a small note pad. If you forget or need something else for any activity write it down right away. It has always help me to to get what I need instead of trying to remember, or getting the wrong thing.

I don't have a BOB yet (it's on my list of things to do), but I pre-schedule regular checks of things with my Weekly Planner.

I update my grocery shopping list weekly.  To make sure I don't run out of toothpaste, for example, I keep the tube I'm using in the medicine cabinet over the sink and a reserve tube in a closet.  When the tube in use runs out, I replace it with the tube from the closet and also add the item to my grocery list.  (I may start keeping more than one tube in my closet as a hedge against SHTF, but that change in procedure is also on my list of things to do because I will extend it to food and a variety of other items.)

I change my critical passwords regularly (e.g., email accounts, bank accounts) because the damage from being hacked is much more serious with these accounts.  I make a note in my Weekly Planner of when I'm going to do these updates and then check off the item as I do them on the dates I originally gave myself at the beginning of the year.

When I travelled for business, I checked the items in my suitcase before I left.  With a BOB, I would check the items as soon as I get home (since unlike business travel, which is scheduled in advance, a BOB is needed at a moment's notice).  I would also remember whether I had used any of the BOB items while away, so it's not that hard to remember to do it.  One might also check a BOB at least monthly if not weekly just to be sure (it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to make sure everything is in order, especially if the check is scheduled ahead of time in the Weekly Planner).

I'm old fashioned and use the Weekly Planner paper-based system, but there are newfangled online scheduling systems I haven't explored yet.  Perhaps they might be a better way to go for some people.

I tried to organize my edc. I am still fine tuning my system. I am finding out that my "day off" system is different from my "work" system and am tying to figure out a way to make them both more closer to the same. Yesterday I planted some blueberry and blackberry bushes. I hope that I did not plant to early and that the critters do not take them out.

Today I hauled out the food storage bins and checked dates, rotated stock, etc, then went to the store and re-stocked on non-perishables.  This happens every six months.  Originally, I set May/November schedule to sync with Hurricane season, but I bumped it up by one month to April/October  so that I am checking expiration dates just before the Thanksgiving food drives in November.  That way if I have surplus food to move, I can donate it before Thanksgiving.

By the way, I volunteer at a food bank and want to remind everyone that food donations should be at least 3-4 months before expiration, otherwise it will get tossed in the dumpster.

Also, we have a Boy Scout meeting tonight.  And you know the Scout motto: Be Prepared! Salute
