The question was: "When do members think the SH*T will hit the fan"…..?????
My Post:
For me the proverbial sh*t hits the fan daily. It is a part of my lifestyle, you just learn to deal with it, or die. The truth in my opinion is that this country was in way, way, way worse condition in the 60's. And we (as a country) survived. Yes, there will be change, but never ever write off America.
Most people do not even have a interesting life, they are bored to tears with their "Safe & Secure" existence, and derive a twisted thrill in fearing the SH*T hitting the fan. People live their so called life vicariously through others drama via TV.
People should stop fearing the SH*T hitting the fan, and start fearing that they are going to die of old age, having never really lived………. (End of Rant)

Got to disagree with you there SD. There were some bad things happening in the US but on a global basis nothing that compares with today. We are nearing a world wide financial melt down, not a bunch of hippies raising hell.

The 1970s were pretty scarey also. Price controls, off the gold standard, resignation of a president, oil embargoes with gas lines and gas rationing, numerous supply shortages (gas, beef, coffee), stagflation, malaise and national mood of helplessness, three-mile island nuclear meltdown, the era of limits, leisure suits <just kidding >.
I see the 2010s as the 1970s on steroids.

The big kicker is the deficit and that changes everything.
Oh sure stagflation sucked and folks still bought relatively cheap homes at 10%-18% interest rates for home loans. I know I lived through the 70's and it wasn't the 70's show they have on TV. Then it was a bunch of Arabs playing economic warfare and raising a barrel of oil from about $6.00 to about $20.00 a barrel during the Carter years and the food price fixing during Nixon. I think Carter was an idiot but he was handed an economic "Crap sandwich" But it was the Keynes model again. Reagan didn't do Keynes but he didn't start cutting the debt either. Released the Military-industrial complex for the cold war.
Wow $20.00 a barrel oil, good times and Fed gas taxes were only .25 cents per gallon instead of .60 + now. But you got to know Obama feels your pain and he just want's you to buy a $40,000 car so you can save some gas money. Of course you will have to pay an electrical bill/price that must skyrocket necessarily for his green jobs plan. Oh wait, HUH!
All you on the dole I'm there with you I get SSD though none of the other goodies the Feds hand out. I'm guessing you are not liking all the inflation you are seeing. I know it's damn hard to fill a gas tank or buy groceries for the month. It's not the TEA party taking money from you it's the FED and Timmy Geitner via inflation. You are being played by the government and the PTBs. (Powers That Be) We will give you info on how we prepared. Hell, we don't care about your color, race or religious background as long as you want to learn and share.
I've always though Tyrone Tonto Horowitz would be a great name to have. Even the Initials are great TTH. This is why I never went to college!

Not much of a danger there SD for a US much less a global collapse. I don't think you appreciate the dangers of an economic collapse. A US collapse will be devastating a world wide collapse may be apocalyptic.

The whole system is an Illusion, Most of what you think is "Real" is also just an Illusion. Time, Money, Safety/Security, all Illusions. Countries are just arbitrary lines for boundaries, just Illusions. Even Right and wrong are Illusions.
Why do people fret and worry about economic collapse……….? The whole economic system is an illusion, they will just make a new system, no big deal. People enjoy worrying about SH*T, it gives them a edginess, a sense of aliveness. If your really worried, just extract yourself from the system. There is a good book called: "My Rugged Years" about a young man who came to Alaska to find Gold in 1927. When he returned to America in 1947 he was shocked to hear there was a thing they called a "Great Depression" and a "World War". For him, it never happened.
I was guiding hunters in the wilderness, and for me the 9-11 World Trade Center attack never happened in my reality till September 21'st when the float plane picked us up.
Remove yourself from the system, Why do people think it will only last 6 months or 12 months or 2 years…..? If your part of the economic system, you are part of the illusion, and by default part of the problem.
I think people are full of something. They say O'God the SH*T is going to hit the fan, it is going to be horrible. So what do they do……..? Really…..30 days food, a years food…..? If you really thought the Titantic was going to sink, you would get the hell off the boat.
Everyone is so damn smug and thinks they will live through the coming horror, have you heard many people say, "I will NOT make it", "I'll most likely be killed or starve to death". No every smug person on every forum thinks they have it covered.
Having something to worry about gives modern humans a sense of aliveness. People addicted to worry.

SD,
Do you think the illusion of a grizzly can kill you? You carry a rifle on long walks, right? But why not extricate yourself from that risky environment? You are there by choice and perfectly able to move else where. But you choose to take on a little adventure in life to give meaning to what otherwise would be a lonely existence. Is it real or just an illusion? I'm sure the bears are real, but the risk is fabricated by your actions. Why not check into the old folks' home where is cozy and warm and the only bears are rugs. Why don't you remove yourself from your system?
I call BS on your first and second rant.

As you have foolishly chosen to attack the messenger, and not refute (in a productive method) the message itself. I am compelled to assume my message has at the very least made you uneasy.
Note also that I do plan to sign up for the "Old Folks" Home (Here called the Pioneer Home) just as soon as I turn 65 in four months. I will not move there till I am compelled too, however they have a very long waiting list and one can not get on the waitlist till one is 65 years of age.

People have a lot to worry about these days. One pawn shop in Las Vegas, for example, no longer accepts construction tools (Secrets From a Pawn Star). Payday loan outlets in the United States are more common than fast foods and coffee shops. Times are slow and the future looks bleak for a lot of people.
I've found that my mind always has to be thinking about something. Once one of my worries goes away, another takes its place within a day or two. But I learned how to harness this trait to my advantage after reading Think and Grow Rich a long time ago. If I'm going to worry about something, it might as well be something I want to achieve to move myself toward a better place (i.e., autosuggestion).

My life 'could' be more interesting but that's another topic…I don't want to live a hard life after the SHTF, but the reason it will hit is because the parasites are sucking the life out of the living. I would like to see them get their dues! In 'Atlas Shrugged', you see the living seperate themselves from the parasites around them and the whole world fell apart. That's an act of true Justice and something to cheer about. May not feel much like cheering when I'm scrapping the last of my beans and rice from the bottom of my bucket, but I hope that I can somehow look at it all from a broad perspective and see that this is just how it should be given the type of people we now call 'fellow Americans'.

Pete, I love ya, but if I had to bet my life on a probable outcome………..I bet it all on the parasites. Sorry, but if the SH*T really ever truly hits the fan……..the parasites, the current day to day street fighters, baddest of the bad ass's are going to be eating the nice civil humans. We kid ourselves about how tough we are. We have reverence for human life, those dope dealers on the U.S. Mexico border would kill us for giggles, and eat our livers. I say forget retribution, forget poetic justice, get yourself and those you love as tough physically and mentally as possible.
In the 70' & 80's I lived a wealthy lifestyle. But for the last 11 years I have lived in a small 11'X23' plywood shack, cooking on a Coleman Campstove, pooping in a hole, and fetched my water from a creek. I eat moose, bear, and salmon. But I now know that if compelled to I can exist at this level for ever. By this coming Monday I will have a indoor toilet, that I will flush once a day with creek water. I exist at a level today that "Parasites" would not accept.
I guess my point Pete, is if and it is a BIG "IF" it happens, it will not be slightly inconvient, it will be "Horrific", truly Hell on Earth. I doubt that it will happen, but if it does happen, I fear having a good life afterwords is a sweet-dream.
Just my opinion, which is free, and yes overpriced.

I hear you SD, I loved growing up in a very small logging town in N. Idaho 60 miles to the nearest hospital and fast food joint. I found I really loved the high desert here in S. Idaho as well. I am looking for a couple of acres out in Owyhee County at a reasonable price. It's still pretty rugged and sparsely populated and I can be fairly close to the VA.
I think I have had a sea change of thinking. I think as a conservative I was just as closed minded as any progressive. Now I hope I am a little more open minded. But even that is irrelevant because I'm getting off the grid mentally to start with and working toward getting off the grid physically.
When I started prepping it was get enough basics to hunker down and wait out the collapse. Now I'm trying to be a little more active in becoming more reliant and sustainable. Quite a few of you are ahead of me in that aspect and it's a lot of hard physical work. I can't do so much hard work so I have to work smarter. I am in a great place in a small city a good neighborhood and I am doing quite a lot on my own and have a plan.
I'm glad you are in a place that suits you and you are happy with your little shack, pooping in a hole and roaming the countryside. There is nothing wrong with that way of life. Some of us can't because of family, handicaps or other reasons. If Gallo can have several countries, bank accounts and a job or business setup around the world. Good for him! Other folks trying to make some money via rent or raising critters or gardening to be self-sufficient Good for them! You want to buy socks, I want to learn to make them.
I've done all of what you are living now. I've ruffed it in the military and pooped in a hole I've dug. Lived in the middle of the woods in a retrofitted school bus. I'm not interested in recreating that, I'd rather learn how to make a composting toilet and making humanure, spinning wool, weaving, canning, smoking and doing my utmost to make life as comfortable as possible.
I'm not knocking what you do or how you live. I admire it, you might think about giving other folks the same consideration. Or perhaps the rant was for the other folks and you are cool with us.

I got it done late yesterday…………
The indoor pooper is attached to the floor, It will have to be flushed once a day with a bucket of water hauled from the creek, but it is a pooper. No walls, or door, no heat, but I got a pooper.

I didn't think you actually expected a serious answer to your rant.
The whole system is an Illusion, Most of what you think is "Real" is also just an Illusion. Time, Money, Safety/Security, all Illusions.
Why do people fret and worry about economic collapse……….?
In your world a grizzly presents a danger to your survival, in our life an economic crash presents a danger to our survival, your life style is just as much an illusion to us as ours to you.
For me the proverbial sh*t hits the fan daily.
There is probably more actual danger (getting robbed, mugged, auto accident.etc.etc) in the lower US than living in the bush in Alaska.
There is a good book called: "My Rugged Years" about a young man who came to Alaska to find Gold in 1927. When he returned to America in 1947 he was shocked to hear there was a thing they called a "Great Depression" and a "World War". For him, it never happened.

Not knowing something has happened doesn't mean it didn't happen. If your cabin were to burn down while you are out hunting wouldn't make it an illusion, your life would have changed, you just don't know it yet.
Sorry it took so long to reply, I was spending four or five days out ridding around the country on my motorcycle with some of my old combat buddies contemplating what a dull boring life I've led and hoping for the S to HTF and zombie hordes to appear to spice up my dull mundane life.

I'm not sure but I think our resident hermit/bard/philosopher , that is SourDough, might be referring to the nature of the world economy being based on "faith and trust" in the promise of governments to pay their debts… that is to make good on the fiat notes they print….. AND the subsequent conclusion that since we KNOW that "faith and trust" in government promises is about as substantial as smoke n mirrors all things that are based on that foundation are illlusionary and transitory hence his equating modern civilization with illusion.
I don't think SD was pushing the "How do you know your not a butterfly dreaming your a man?" Psychedelic drug enhanced perception of things.
