These have been popular in homes and they suck! You can't use a canner and the glass is weak compared to an electric range or gas. I just took over an electric hot plate to my neighbors that have a glass top range that can't bring 1.5 gallons to a boil. The hot plate can bring 2 gallons to a boil and yes it took awhile on the test but the hot plate worked compared to a sleek and sexy stove that cost a bit of money and you can't use a canner on and won't boil water in a big pot without cracking the glass or just won't generate heat for a boil with a big pot of water. Why would I buy a stove that can't even boil a couple of gallons of water for $500.00 + when I can buy a heat plate that can do it for under $25.00?
Yes I'm mad, I think a stove top capable of boiling water is not to much to expect. Folks should never buy theese pieces of crap, that have failure built in.

We have an electric range, the old type with the coils. It works fine for canning, but I still want to switch to an LPG range so we will have a stove if we lose electricity. My wife is dead set against it,she hates gas stoves. I guess I could buy the two burner portable type. During out ten day power outage ice storm a couple of years back we used a coleman stove and a propane grill. I may buy an old gas range and store it, in case of a more permanent outage.

Jarhead I bought a Campchef portable oven that runs on propane. Cost can be anywhere from $180.00-$250.00. My Mom pulled out an RV oven and set it up as a free standing oven that uses a regular propane tank she can wheel around for use in the garage or outside in the summer.

When we ordered our house, we opted for the glass top range ( )…the thing really sucks! It seems to boil about anything we try but it stays hot forever and burns anything you leave on the stove, even after you shut it down. And from a prepping standpoint, don't get any worse than electric…in a grid down situation, electric is always the first to go. I have a gas grill that's been more than sufficient for power outages but sure would be nice if the stove was propane to boot. Money's tight right now; so, changing over will not be high on the priority list.

Pete keep your eye out for an old used non-electric lpg stove to put in your garage. You could set it up for using in the summer instead of heating up the house or for big canning jobs. Anyway nonelectric so the oven (not as critical as the stove but nice to have) and stove works with the grid down and lpg is sweet for INSTANT heat and fast cool down I LOVE gas stoves.

I'm currently looking for a wood burning stove for back up. Also keeping a side long eye out for a cheap outdoor stone/clay oven.

Will do, Crabby: that garage is quickly expanding my 'prepping' options.
